The Runaways Movie Review
I've been waiting to see this movie for a while now. Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning did a shitload of press for it, but in the end it failed to even leave a mark on the box office. It's kind of a shame because it actually isn't a bad movie, and the Runaways deserve the respect as being one of the first female rock bands around.
The movie was based off lead singer Cherie Currie's memoir's called "Neon Angel" and Cherie and Joan Jett were consultants, constantly on the films set giving advice and direction to the movies stars.
Firstly, it should be noted that the costumes were absolutely amazing, and Dakota Fanning had to wear some of the tackiest shit it was so beautiful! Please notice her top in the following pic...
I was actually impressed by some of the actors and embarrassed for others. I guess Dakota Fanning is always amazing. I give her credit since the opening scene involved her getting her period, with blood running down her leg. Does that actually happen?
Dakota had some really embarrassing parts to pull off, and for that reason alone I give her credit. Watching her dance and lip-sync to David Bowie made my life and gave me second hand embarrassment so badly!
Dakota and Kristen also play and sing the music themselves! Watch.
Elvis Presley's granddaughter Riley Keough plays Cherie Currie's twin sister Marie and actually looks more like the Currie sisters than Dakota. I was actually pretty impressed by her. She plays the sweet-sister-left-behind role really well. In the parts where she needed to be indifferent and distant from her sister she did pretty well. I'm not sure if she earned her part or got it solely for being Elvis' grandchild (there were many references to Elvis during the film), but she stood out nonetheless.
Kristen Stewart was surprisingly not too awkward during the film. She looks a whole lot like Joan Jett and she did really well too.
Overall I though the movie was pretty good. I feel like while the movie was based on the rise and fall of the band, there weren't as many details as to why things were happening and why the animosity began in the band. They detailed that the band was upset when Cherie did a solo photoshoot, but there was already a sense of distance between the band members and there was no reasons given.
To make the divide in the band even bigger, just a note that the end credits show a "where are they now" sequence, only telling of what happened to Joan and Cherie as if the other band members were non-existent. Nicely done.
K so I give this 3 hip-hop Jesus' out of 5
