...and all the phone companies for that matter.
Dearest Readers,
I am pleased to announce yet another way we consumers have beaten the oligopoly that is Rogers, Bell, and Telus.
With the launch of the iPad in Canada, we saw the release of two new data options available free of contract (like they're doing us a favour...). These plans rate out at $35 for 5 GB of data. In addition, you have to activate your iPad plan, adding bucks to the bill.
On the Apple side of it, god bless them, the iPad without 3G (only WiFi) starts at $549 Canadian. With 3G +WiFi, tack on $130 to that.
If you already have an iPhone, are you really willing to dish out cash on TWO data plans? Didn't think so. So into the hands of hackers it went, and we are now left with something extraordinary: MyFi via iPhone. This sweet little app turns your iPhone into a WiFi hotspot, tethering your data plan from the iPhone to ANY WiFi device! PSP, DS, iPad, MacBook... you name it! With a small price tag of only $10, it's a pretty sweet deal that can end up leaving dollars in your pocket.
It does require a jailbroken iPhone. It sounds sketchy, but jailbreaking the iPhone basically unlocks all the AMAZING capabilities Apple locked up before shipping. It's free and easy. Once jailbroken, you simply buy the $10 app, boot it up, and connect your iPad to it's new wireless network. There's no need to buy another plan. For me, I am ALWAYS using my data and monthly, and I average about 190 MB of data consumption from my 500 MB plan. There's plenty to share with the iPad.
I'm stoked! I thought I would have to buy the WiFi +3G for the extra $130, then spend an additional $15 or $35 each month to make it worthwhile. I guess I was wrong :)
When you consider it, in one year the savings basically pays for the iPad itself:
$35 + 13% tax = $39.55
$130 + 13% tax = $146.90
(12 months x $39.55) + $146.90 - $10.00 = $611.50 in one year.
Not too shabby!
